Did you know that how you stand and speak is how you are being perceived?
You may think ‘I have no desire to speak publically, I will never step onto stage to give a presentation’…
… I want you to know this: When someone asks you what it is that you do, and you give your elevator pitch or “Impact Statement”, the stage is been given to you.
So why won’t you “Own the Stage” and present yourself as the expert and authority in your industry?
STAND & DELIVER
It is often said that some people have the ability to really “Own the Stage” when they make a presentation. But what does that mean? As audience members, we make judgments about the presenter based on how they sound and look. I’m not talking here about your choice of clothes – although this is important. I mean your physically – specifically, your posture and your stance – because physicality plays a big part in people’s perception of you.
Most people just don’t stand well, and this is magnified when you get up in front of an audience. Men tend to stand with their feet wide in the cowboy-like pose, and woman often stand with their weight on one foot with uneven hips. Neither of these are professional postures. it is not the pose of an authority figure. It is not exposing confidence.
Confidence Stand: having your feet hip-width apart with your pelvis in neutral position and a nice lengthened spine. It isn’t about being tall, but it is about using all your available height and being comfortable in your own skin.
People are more aware of your non-verbal language than they are aware of your words.
“Don’t be perfect, be authentic. It seems that one of the most challenging presentation skill is to simply be you!”
Many speakers adopt an onstage persona that is different to how they are offstage. This onstage persona is often one of feeling they need to be perfect and not make any mistakes. It’s as if the presenter is protecting their real self underneath. They want to protect themselves from attack, or dislike. But when you wear a suit of protection, it comes across as insincere and inauthentic, and this is exactly when people will attack or dislike you.
Let’s be honest, we all dislike fake people. What do you think about somebody who is clearly hiding something?
CONNECT AND RAPPORT
When you speak is not just to inform, but to transform. A huge part of your ability to transformation will be shaped by the way in which you connect. Connection occurs when you listen and reply.
“Most people don’t listen to communicate and interact, they only listen to react and force their words upon you.”
PUNCTUATE YOUR MESSAGE WITH PAUSES
Pausing isn’t just giving you time to breathe. Your audience also needs an opportunity to take in what you’ve said so they can make a picture in their mind or reflect upon your point.
CHALLENGE & PRACTICE
After reading this post, and after crafting your ‘new’ elevator pitch, why don’t you video record yourself? (I know you have a smartphone, and I know you know how to record a video of your singing kid, dancing dog, so, yes, you can record yourself too :-)
It’s a really good excercise (to see yourself presenting yourself) and most of us haven’t practiced our elevator pitch before… so why not practice in your little safe environment untill your elevator pitch becomes your powerful Impact Statement?
BONUS! When you shoot a ‘next to perfect’ intro of yourself, you can use that video to present yourself at your website. It is a fact that visitors stay longer on a website with video than without video.
We’re looking forward to see your Impact Statement!
